Wat Phra That Doi Suthep is arguably the most famous and revered temple in Northern Thailand. This staircase, consisting of over 300 steps, symbolizes the ascent from the earthly realm to the heavenly.According to legend, the temple was founded in 1383 by King Ku Na of the Lanna Kingdom after a sacred relic of the Buddha mysteriously broke in two. One piece was enshrined at Wat Suan Dok, and the other was placed on the back of a royal white elephant. The elephant was released and climbed Mount Suthep, trumpeted three times, and then died at the spot where the temple now stands, marking the sacred location for the relic.
